My debut fabric collection for Kennard & Kennard Fabrics, “The Last Post Field” is an Australian remembrance-inspired fabric collection that blends landscape, botanical illustration and quiet symbolism. The designs imagine standing on apeak in the Grampians ranges of regional Victoria, looking out across the valley below where misted fields and soft sunrise skies stretch across the landscape. Through this quiet scene drift gentle echoes of remembrance – fields of poppies and the distant notes of the Last Post suggested through flowing lines of musical notation across the horizon. Australian botanicals frame the compositions, with gum leaves, banksia and native wildflowers woven through the designs to create a distinctly Australian sense of place. The palette reflects the stillness of early morning: warm dawn skies, muted native greensand earth tones, and the vivid red of remembrance poppies emerging from the landscape.

The collection is designed to work across multiple quilting applications, including two portrait panels, a square panel to form a central medallion or stand-alone piece, borders and coordinates. Contemporary stripes add modern design options and a freshening of a traditional approach.

The inspiration for the collection is rooted in memories of growing up in Ararat, near the Grampians. My friend grew up under the careful guidance of his veteran father who loved cultivating Australian native plants. Their respect and values rippled through the community in which they lived. My friend went on to a distinguished career in the Australian Defence Force, including overseas service. In a touching continuation of that connection, he named his daughter Kassandra, and she too chose a path of military service. His son may follow their family tradition…Those intertwined stories of friendship, landscape and service quietly echo through The Last Post Field – a collection designed for remembrance quilts, tribute pieces and heirloom projects that honour memory, place and legacy.
